An important part of your experience in Costa Rica is living with a family. It is within this context that you will see the “real Tico idiosyncrasy”.

You will enjoy three meals every day (breakfast, lunch and dinner). For UNA students, you may choose to have lunch at home or to have it pack to bring it to campus. At both universities, there are student cafeterias where you may heat your lunch up.

Adjusting to a new household and its rules may be a challenge. This is why we want to share some advise with you:

Tutorials are pedagogic activities the Program offers with the purpose of orienting and supporting students during their learning-education process while in Costa Rica.

Tutorials are complementary activities which importance lies on orienting students based on their academic needs and problems. The idea is to accompany you in the development of study strategies that may allow a good academic performance, and especially in Spanish.

Volunteer work is a space to share support and improve language skills. Based on solidarity, this is a way to learn about other cultures.

UNIVERSIDAD NACIONAL

ADVANCED PROGRAM

IFSA offers our students the possibility to get involved in a volunteer work program, offered in two different modes.

Weekly volunteer mode
Is an option for students who wish to work on a weekly basis, dedicating a minimum of two hours of volunteer work per week. The different options offered in this modality of the program are:

  • Teaching English to Kinder garden students
  • Teaching English to Primary students
  • Teaching English to High school students
  • Teaching English to adults (university staff, women who stay and work at home, professors etc.
  • Environmental related programs offered by the Instituto Nacional de Biodiversidad, INBIO (National Biodiversity Institute).
  • Nursing homes
  • Orphanages, shelters
  • Republic´s Congress
  • Animal Shelters

Intensive volunteer work mode
This is a volunteer program offered to those students who wish to accomplish intensive labor in rural areas for as many week-ends necessary or desired.

The options in this mode are:

  • Turtle protection in the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica
  • Beach cleaning in National Parks and beaches
  • Indigenous community aid
  • Reforestation
  • Trail maintenance in National Parks, etc.
  • Teaching English in rural areas
  • School restoration in rural areas
  • Biological reserve restoration
